Why Solar Power is the Energy of the Future

As oil prices continue to skyrocket, people are looking for other cheaper and more sustainable sources of energy. Most natural resources are non-renewable and most of them have been decreasing in supply and have become more costly, most especially oil due to the unstable political conditions in Africa and the Middle East. Solar power is one of the most popular alternative energy sources, considered to be the cleanest, greenest and most sustainable. This is the energy harnessed from the sun using specialised solar panels. The boom of the green movement during the last few decades have shifted the attention from merely production to sustainable and renewable energy as the Earth’s natural resources continue to dwindle. One of the major controversies last year was the BP oil spill, and this just put into the spotlight the dangers of our oil dependency and the harm it can bring to our planet as a whole.

A lot of initiatives from countries all over the world from both the government and private sector focus on increasing the research, financing, infrastructure and education when it comes to the development of solar energy. At present, solar power is still largely underutilised, with the cost of setting up solar power systems being its primary deterrent. While some energy-conscious households have already set up their own home solar power systems, this type of energy is still more commonly used among the commercial, industrial and even academic sectors. Even when you already have a solar power system running in your home or business, you are still required to connect to the traditional power grid. To be able to do this you need a standard interconnection procedure which will be arranged for you by your local energy provider. During the times when your solar power system is producing a surplus of energy, this electricity goes back into your power grid and can give your home or business energy credits from the government. This way, commercial solar power can also help prevent incidences of electrical blackouts that can occur using traditional electric grids.

In remote areas where traditional energy lines are not available, solar energy is an efficient and reliable source of energy. The potential of solar power as a sustainable and widespread energy resource is becoming more and more viable as energy service providers, governments, businesses and households see the benefits of this alternative. In the future, it is predicted that solar energy use will continue to rise and we will be less dependent on fuel energy which is more costly and whose supply is still largely volatile. In an age where reducing carbon footprint has become a way of life for an increasing number of people, solar energy fits perfectly into the equation of sustainability for the future.
